Above the Lake Ohau Lodge via a 9.6km access road, the powder snow, sunshine, friendly people and uncrowded slopes is what makes Ohau Snow Fields special.
The mountain has a double chair lift accessing wide open flat areas suitable for intermediates and is the start to some great hiking to find the powder bowls and chutes that the advanced crave. There is also a learner’s magic carpet and platter for the developing skiier/boarder.
The mountain is not a big resort but is known for punching above its weight. For three years in a row Ohau Snow Fields has been the winner of the vied for snow.co.nz service award. The mountain caters for everyone from families through to powder hounds and the reasonable prices make it an affordable holiday. There is a beautiful mountain café which serves wholesome food and espresso coffee. It has long wooden tables and benches, a log fire and a great view of the mountain and the lake from the deck
The Snow School instructors excel in teaching children and during the school holidays in particular the children’s “Mountain Goats” programme hums. There is a good selection of skis, snowboards, boots and helmets.
Turn off is on State Highway 8 between Twizel and Omarama. Drive 25 km to Lake Ohau Lodge and then Ohau Snow Fields is only 9.6 kms (15 minutes) via a good metal access road.
