The largest lake in the Mackenzie with views of Aoraki/Mount Cook. The water colour of the lake is a bright turquoise due to glacial flour, made from extremely fine rock particles that have come from the surrounding glaciers. A scenic portion of the world-famous Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail winds along the lake foreshore.
A man-made lake created during Twizel’s hydro-electricity era, Lake Ruataniwha’s shallow water makes this lake a family favourite for swimming and recreation. The lake features a purpose-built rowing course, famous in New Zealand for hosting the bi-annual Aon Maadi Cup rowing championships.
A 700-hectare lake located 12km from Fairlie. Popular for swimming, picnicking, camping, water sports and boating. A great fishing spot with trout and salmon. There are boat launch ramps and water ski lanes. A walking track follows the perimeter of the lake with outstanding views.
Lake Tekapo is well known for the famous Church of the Good Sheperd on the lakeshore. Mountains surround this alpine lake providing beautiful views in every direction. A drive up Lilybank Road on the eastern side provides epic views of the lake.
The Mackenzie transforms into a winter playground over the cooler months. Whether you’re after an action-packed ski and snowboard holiday, or just relaxing by logfires and sipping mulled wine, the Mackenzie has it all!
Located near Lake Tekapo this spring-fed lake is a hidden gem. Sitting within a protected wildlife area free from motorboats and jet skis, the lake is magnificently peaceful. A paradise for those into high country fishing, the lake is abundant with brown and rainbow trout, plus salmon.
Just a short drive from Twizel is the Waitaki District’s Lake Ōhau. Fed from the Hopkins & Dobson Rivers, the lake is popular for water sport in summer, while winter is excellent for skiing and snowboarding at Ōhau Snow Fields. There are also plenty of walking tracks, and the world-famous Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail winds along the lake foreshore.
A Department of Conservation wildlife reserve popular for fishing and camping. Use the campsite as a base for recreational activities around the Twizel area or as an overnight stay in a picturesque setting. There are picnic tables provided. Turn off SH8 onto the Pūkaki Canal Road (take care, this is a gravel road).
