How to get there
Burkes Pass is a small township located on State Highway 8, half way between Lake Tekapo and Fairlie. The drive is approximately 15 minutes in either direction. The Heritage walk can be started at St Patrick’s Church where you can pick up a pamphlet with information on the walk, and from here, continue up to the Cemetery or head down past the cob cottages. The walk itself starts on the other side of the road opposite the cemetery, and follows a mown grass track and ends opposite Anniss Cob Cottage.

This walk is a journey of discovery, providing a glimpse of the rich history that helped shape the pioneering settlement of the Mackenzie Country. You will pass various points of interest including the Musterer’s hut, the Mount Cook Road Board Office, school and cob cottages. The walk meanders its way along a grass track and boardwalks with heritage information and photo panels along the way.
A game for children called ‘Where’s Sally’ will provide fun searching out images of a collie dog along the track using clues and reward cards also available at the Church or little red Musterer’s Hut. After completing the walk you can discover the cluster of heritage-style buildings including part of the original Burkes Pass Hotel.

Picnic spots, craft/gift shop, coffee caravan, hotel, motel. This walk is wheelchair accessible although care is required due to the grass and surrounding planting, and some gentle rises in terrain.
