Ski the Mackenzie: Roundhill
From beginner to expert skier or snowboarder, Roundhill Lake Tekapo is the prime alpine location to make the most of the winter months.
We asked the Roundhill team for their insider tips on the best slopes, family spots, photo ops and more.
Tell us about the can’t-miss trails for…
– Beginners –
Schatzy’s Way – This is a nice long run with a little bit of everything, some nice wide mellow areas, a little bit of steep stuff to keep you on your toes and a fun banked trail on the way out.
– Intermediates –
Speedway into Park Run – Starting nice, wide and easy this trail has a few sections that are steep enough to make your heart pound but short enough that you don’t have time to give it too much thought! Ski out through the fun rollers at the end.
– Experts –
Who’s Your Daddy – Hold on to your hats, this is the BIG KAHUNA! Accessed from The Heritage Express, traverse along the ridge and pick your line, the options are limitless.
How about the highlights for families?
Our super sunny aspect means we bathe in the sunshine for most of the day. We have a fantastic Father’s Day event where kids compete with their Dads in a fun slalom race (and Dad gets a half price lift pass!) and there are awesome prizes up for grabs.
Locals would say…
Get in early and you can grab a slope-side parking spot. Bring your BBQs and deck chairs and set up camp for the day right on the slope!
Where’s THE photo spot?
There are too many to mention. We have breathtaking views of Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook and The Southern Alps!
Don’t ski? Come for the…
…tobogganing. We hire toboggans on the mountain and have a purpose built slope so you can sled to your heart’s content!
Last, but not least…
Don’t miss the von Brown Hut, located towards the top of the T1 Lift. It’s a little oasis where you can relax, sit back on a deck chair with a blanket and enjoy a schnapps and a yarn with the locals.
Roundhill is located off State Highway 8, 32 kms up the eastern shore of Lake Tekapo near Tekapo Village. Check out local accommodation options or these great activities to try after your day on the slopes:
