Day 1

Fairlie to Lake Tekapo

When stopping in Fairlie be sure to enjoy a delicious treat from the famous Fairlie Bakehouse – renowned for its award-winning pies and freshly baked goods. Afterwards, explore the unique shops at Bobby Square, where you’ll find local crafts, boutique clothing, and artisan products that capture the spirit of the Mackenzie Region.

As midday approaches, continue your drive to Burkes Pass, a historic settlement offering a glimpse into the region’s pioneering past. Stop at Three Creeks, a quirky and eclectic store featuring rustic Kiwiana décor, vintage signs, and handcrafted gifts. Whether you’re looking for a unique souvenir or just browsing, this shop is a hidden gem worth exploring.

In the afternoon, arrive at Lake Tekapo and embark on an exhilarating 4WD adventure with Tekapo Adventures, which takes you deep into the remote Mackenzie high country. Traverse rugged alpine landscapes, learn about the region’s farming heritage, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding mountains. This off-road experience offers a thrilling way to explore the area’s natural beauty.

As night falls, prepare for an unforgettable stargazing experience under the pristine skies of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. With minimal light pollution, the region offers some of the clearest night skies in the world. Whether you join a guided tour or simply gaze up from the lakeshore, you’ll witness a dazzling display of stars, planets, and even the Milky Way in all its glory.

Lake Tekapo has a great range of accommodation to suit all styles. Some faves include Grand Suites, Isolation Bay, Bunker House, Peppers Bluewater Resort, The Cairns Alpine Resort, and Ranginui B&B.

Three Creeks

Continue your journey to Three Creeks, a quirky shop in the historic township of Burkes Pass that offers a delightful mix of vintage Americana collectibles, art, retro coffee caravan and a touch of rural New Zealand charm. 

Tekapo Adventures

Arriving at Lake Tekapo, get ready for some off-road excitement with Tekapo Adventures. A 4WD tour will take you deep into the rugged mountain valleys surrounding the lake, offering stunning views and a taste of adventure in the high country.

Stargazing

Lake Tekapo is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, making it one of the best places in the world to view the night sky. Choose from various stargazing tours ranging from an astronomical observatory, hot pools, farms, and more.

Day 2

Lake Tekapo

Start your day in Lake Tekapo with a morning fishing trip at Fish Tekapo, where you can enjoy the stunning alpine scenery while trying to catch trout and salmon. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned angler, expert guides provide everything you need for a rewarding experience on the pristine lake.

At midday, take to the skies with Mackenzie Helicopters or Air Safaris for a scenic flight to the Whisky Hut, a remote alpine retreat offering world-class whisky tastings with breathtaking views of the Southern Alps. The journey itself is a highlight, with panoramic vistas that make this experience unforgettable.

In the afternoon, unwind at Tekapo Springs, where the soothing mineral-rich hot pools and spa facilities provide the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate after a day of adventure. The stunning lake and mountain backdrop add to the serenity of this tranquil retreat.

End your day with a delightful meal at T.L.V. (Tekapo Lake View) Restaurant, offering a menu rich in locally sourced ingredients and a fine selection of New Zealand wines. With its beautiful lakefront setting and warm ambience, T.L.V. provides the perfect finale to your Lake Tekapo adventure.

Fish Tekapo

Whisky Hut

After your fishing expedition, take to the skies with Mackenzie Helicopters or Air Safaris and visit the Whisky Hut. Perched at 2,000m on top of a mountain this humble hut offers a carefully curated selection of fine whiskies – perfect for a midday treat.

Tekapo Springs

Unwind after a day of adventure with a soothing dip at Tekapo Springs. The hot pools here offer breathtaking views of the lake and mountains, making it the ideal spot to relax and recharge. Licensed cafe, kids play area, mini-golf and more.

Day 3

Aoraki/Mount Cook

Start your day with a scenic morning drive to Aoraki/Mount Cook, journeying through the breathtaking landscapes of the Mackenzie Region. As you approach New Zealand’s tallest peak, the striking views of snow-capped mountains and turquoise lakes set the tone for an unforgettable adventure.

At midday, embark on an exciting tour with Glacier Explorers, where you’ll cruise across the terminal lake of the Tasman Glacier. Witness towering icebergs up close and learn about the ever-changing glacial landscape from expert guides. This unique experience offers a rare opportunity to see New Zealand’s largest glacier in action.

In the afternoon, explore the iconic Hooker Valley Track, a relatively easy walk offering stunning views of Aoraki/Mount Cook, swing bridges, and glacial rivers. Afterwards, visit the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about the park’s natural history, Māori heritage, and conservation efforts.

Hermitage Hotel

Day 4

Twizel

Start your day with an exhilarating Glentanner Heli Hike, where a scenic helicopter flight will take you deep into the Southern Alps for an unforgettable alpine hiking experience. Soak in breathtaking views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and the surrounding glaciers as you explore remote, pristine landscapes with expert guides. This adventure offers a unique perspective of the region’s rugged beauty and is perfect for those seeking a thrilling start to the day.

By midday, switch gears and enjoy a ride along the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, one of New Zealand’s most scenic cycling routes. Pedal through picturesque valleys and alongside shimmering lakes, with a stop at the beautiful Lake Ohau Lodge for a well-deserved break. Here, you can relax and refuel with a delicious cyclist platter on the deck while taking in the stunning lake and mountain vistas before continuing your ride.

As the afternoon transitions into evening, make your way to Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat, where an exceptional dining experience awaits at The Moraine. This exclusive restaurant offers a carefully curated menu featuring locally sourced ingredients, paired with breathtaking views of Lake Pūkaki and Aoraki/Mount Cook. Indulge in fine cuisine and warm hospitality as you reflect on your adventure-filled day.

There are many unique places to stay in Twizel – luxury lodges, glass-covered stargazing pods, stylish cabins, hotels, bed & breakfasts, farmstays and more. Some faves include SkyScape, Lakestone Lodge, Matuka Lodge and Skylark Cabin.

Glentanner Heli-Hike

Fly up and hike down! Take a helicopter flight to a high point on Glentanner Station. Continue on foot with an easy walk down a picturesque farm track. Your guide will share stories of the station’s history, geological features, flora, fauna and present-day operations.

Alps 2 Ocean

On your final day, choose between a cycling adventure on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail with Cycle Journeys or take a scenic drive to Ōhau Lodge. The route offers some of the most spectacular views in the region.

The Moraine

Treat yourself to a luxurious dinner at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat. If you missed the stargazing at Lake Tekapo, the retreat offers an incredible ‘Billion Star Dining’ experience – dining under one of the clearest night skies in the world.

Day 5

Depart to Queenstown

As you bid farewell to the breathtaking landscapes of the Mackenzie Region, embark on a scenic drive toward Queenstown, a journey that offers some of the most spectacular views in New Zealand. Along the way, make a memorable stop at High Country Salmon, located near Twizel. This floating café, farm and restaurant provides a unique opportunity to feed the salmon, learn about sustainable aquaculture, and enjoy fresh, locally sourced delicacies. Whether you opt for a salmon sashimi platter, smoked fillets, or a hearty salmon burger, the flavours are sure to impress.
