Visit the mountain-top Astro Cafe at Mt John’s Observatory for the most incredible 360-degree views of the Mackenzie Region and great coffee!

Fully enclosed in glass, protecting from the elements but not restricting the views the Astro Café serves fresh sandwiches made with Mackenzie High Country bread, delectable cakes and slices to satisfy the sweet tooth, warming soup in winter and cooling smoothies in summer.

Astro Cafe: Monday – Sunday, 9am – 2pm (final order at 1.30pm)

Mt John access road:  Monday – Sunday, 9am – 4pm

Mount John, Lake Tekapo
Only 1km south of Lake Tekapo on State Highway 8 is the turnoff to Mt John Observatory and the Astro Café, approximately 10-15 minutes drive from Lake Tekapo village, there is a charge of $8 per vehicle to access this road due to ongoing maintenance. Alternatively, you can walk up to the cafe via a well-utilised walkway taking approximately 1.5 hours return starting close to Tekapo Springs.
